President Donald Trump’s year-long celebration of America’s 250th birthday launched on New Year’s Eve as the Washington Monument was lit up as a “birthday candle” and illuminated in a “projection-mapping spectacle” at the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
In a Wednesday post on X, formerly Twitter, the White House’s Rapid Response 47 account shared pictures of the Washington Monument lit up in celebration of the country’s 250th anniversary. The Trump administration announced that the “illumination of America on the Washington Monument” marked the start of this year’s celebration of the 250th birthday of the United States.
In a press release, Freedom 250, which was established by Trump as a nonpartisan organization responsible for helping plan celebrations throughout the year in honor of America’s 250th birthday, announced that this year’s New Year’s Eve celebration in Washington, D.C., would “feature a special New Year’s Eve countdown moment, illuminating the Washington Monument with a 250-foot birthday candle and marking the official arrival of America’s 250th year — launching a national celebration.”
A video shared by Fox News shows the Washington Monument being lit up like a birthday candle at the start of 2026 following the New Year’s Eve countdown.
“The illumination of the Washington Monument marks the beginning of a momentous year for our nation—250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence,” Freedom 250 CEO Keith Krach said. “We invite every American—and every friend of America—to join this historic celebration of the triumph of the American spirit.”
The White House’s Rapid Response 47 also shared a video on Friday of multiple different images projected onto the Washington Monument celebrating the country’s 250 years of history.
Freedom 250 announced that a video projection presentation at the Washington Monument will be available for the public to enjoy until January 5th, with free viewings scheduled for each evening.
