In a recent press release, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department announced, “On Friday, August 22, shortly before 10 p.m., officers responded to an Assault with a Deadly Weapon call for service in the 1800 block of Camden Road. Upon arrival, officers discovered one victim with sustained knife wounds. The subject was pronounced on the scene by MEDIC.”
Police officials have identified the victim as 23-year-old Iryna Zarutska. Meanwhile, the suspect has been identified as 34-year-old Decarlos Brown Jr. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department confirmed that Brown has been charged with first-degree murder following last month’s incident.Pictures shared on social media show both Zarutska and Brown on the train in North Carolina.
According to Fox News, Zarutska, who has been identified as a Ukrainian refugee, was stabbed three times by Brown. The video from the fatal stabbing incident shows Brown walking through the train and taking off his sweatshirt after stabbing Zarutska.
The New York Post reported that court records show that Brown has been arrested multiple times for robbery with a dangerous weapon, felony larceny, and communicating threats. The outlet noted that the 34-year-old suspect was in prison for five years for robbery with a deadly weapon and was homeless at the time of the stabbing incident.
Commenting on the recent tragedy in a statement on social media, State Rep. Brenden Jones (R-N.C.) said, “The tragedy of Iryna Zarutska’s death in Charlotte is the result of decades of Democrat DAs and Sheriffs putting their woke agendas above public safety.”
Jones added, “Violent criminals commit crimes with impunity, while families live in fear.”
Asked about the fatal stabbing incident during a press gaggle on Sunday, President Donald Trump described the news as “horrible” and said, “I haven’t heard ... [but] I’ll know all about it by tomorrow morning.”
Following Zarutska’s death, Zepeddies, the restaurant the 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee worked at, released a statement on Instagram, saying, “Recently our Zepeddie’s family suffered a tremendous loss. We lost not only an incredible employee, but a true friend. Our dear Iryna left this world far too soon, and our hearts are heavy with grief.”
“Since her passing, we have kept a candle burning in her memory—a small reminder of the warmth, kindness, and light she brought into our lives every single day,” the restaurant added.
