A new report claims that Sen. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) is under criminal investigation by the Trump administration for mortgage fraud.
A Trump administration source told Fox News on Tuesday that the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Maryland launched a criminal investigation into the Democrat senator for potential mortgage fraud charges. The outlet noted that the criminal investigation into Schiff comes after it was reported that the Federal Housing Finance Agency sent President Donald Trump’s Department of Justice a criminal referral, claiming that Schiff falsified property records and bank documents multiple times to obtain favorable loans.
Fox News reported that Schiff signed an affidavit in 2011 while serving as a California congressman, claiming that his primary residence was a property in Montgomery County, Maryland; however, the Democrat lawmaker also has claimed a condominium in Burbank, California, as his primary residence.
In a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi and Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, FHFA Director William Pulte wrote, “Based on media reports, Mr. Adam B. Schiff has, in multiple instances, falsified bank documents and property records to acquire more favorable loan terms, impacting payments from 2003-2019 for a Potomac, Maryland-based property.”
Fox News reported that Pulte was sent a memo from the Fannie Mae Financial Crimes Investigations, which claimed that Schiff demonstrated a “sustained pattern of possible occupancy misrepresentation” on five different Fannie Mae loans.
According to Fox News, Pulte suggested that Schiff’s alleged actions could represent the violation of federal criminal codes that ban bank fraud, mail fraud, wire fraud, and false statements to financial institutions.
Pulte claimed that the Democrat senator “appears to have falsified records in order to receive favorable loan terms, and also appears to have been aware of the financial benefits of a primary residence mortgage when compared to a secondary residence mortgage.”
In a Truth Social post last month, Trump wrote, “I have always suspected Shifty Adam Schiff was a scam artist. And now I learn that Fannie Mae’s Financial Crimes Division have concluded that Adam Schiff has engaged in a sustained pattern of possible Mortgage Fraud.”
Trump claimed that Schiff listed his primary residence as a property in Maryland to obtain a lower mortgage rate and “rip off America.” The president suggested that despite Schiff’s claim, he would have been required to live in California while serving as a California congressman.
“I always knew Adam Schiff was a Crook. The FRAUD began with the refinance of his Maryland property on February 6, 2009, and continued through multiple transactions until the Maryland property was correctly designated as a second home on October 13, 2020,” Trump added. “Mortgage Fraud is very serious, and CROOKED Adam Schiff (now a Senator) needs to be brought to justice.”
