A new report claims that President Donald Trump’s Department of Justice is considering ways to ban transgender individuals from purchasing firearms. The report comes after a transgender male killed 2 children and left 21 people injured in a school shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota, last week.
According to The Daily Wire, a Justice Department source told the outlet, “Individuals within the DOJ are reviewing ways to ensure that mentally ill individuals suffering from gender dysphoria are unable to obtain firearms while they are unstable and unwell.”
The anonymous Justice Department source told The Daily Wire that the department’s discussions regarding ways to prevent transgender individuals from purchasing firearms have revolved around the issue of gender dysphoria, which causes individuals to believe that their gender identity does not match their biological sex.
The Justice Department source added, “Under Attorney General Bondi’s leadership this Department of Justice is actively considering a range of options to prevent mentally unstable individuals from committing acts of violence, especially at schools.”
Discussing the Justice Department’s potential actions to prevent transgender individuals from purchasing firearms, a Justice Department source said, “Democrats have called for common sense gun laws for a long time.” The source added, “This seems pretty common sense to me.”
The suspect behind last week’s school shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church has been identified as Robin Westman, a 23-year-old male who claimed to be transgender. The Daily Wire reported that last week’s tragic shooting incident was not the first school shooting carried out by a transgender individual. The outlet noted that a female who claimed to be a transgender male killed three students and three staff members during a school shooting at The Covenant School in Nashville, Tennessee, in 2023.
In a statement obtained by CNN, the Justice Department noted that it “is actively evaluating options to prevent the pattern of violence we have seen from individuals with specific mental health challenges and substance abuse disorders.” However, the Justice Department confirmed that “no specific criminal justice proposals have been advanced at this time.”
Alejandra Caraballo, a Harvard Law School clinical instructor, told CNN that preventing transgender individuals from purchasing firearms could eventually lead to other individuals losing their right to own firearms.
“This precedent being used against trans people could be used against veterans with PTSD,” Caraballo warned. “It’s a slippery slope to make anyone lose their 2nd amendment rights.”
