Videos: Armed anti-ICE protester fatally shot by Border Patrol agent in Minneapolis

A U.S. Border Patrol agent fatally shot an anti-U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) protester in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on Saturday, after the protester allegedly confronted federal law enforcement officials while armed and “violently resisted” when officials attempted to disarm him.

During a news conference following Saturday’s shooting, Border Patrol Commander Greg Bovino explained that Department of Homeland Security officials were carrying out a “targeted operation” against Jose Huerta-Chuma, an illegal immigrant with a criminal history of domestic assault to intentionally inflict bodily harm, disorderly conduct, and driving without a valid license.

“During this operation, an individual approached U.S. Border Patrol agents with a 9mm semi-automatic handgun,” Bovino told reporters. “The agents attempted to disarm the individual, but he violently resisted. Fearing for his life and the lives and safety of fellow officers, a Border Patrol agent fired defensive shots.”

While medics immediately attempted to provide medical aid to the anti-ICE protester, Bovino confirmed that the protester was pronounced dead at the scene of the shooting. The Border Patrol commander noted that the suspect did not have an accessible identification and had two loaded magazines at the time of the shooting.

Fox News reported that the individual killed during Saturday’s incident in Minneapolis has been identified as 37-year-old Alex Pretti. According to the outlet, the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Bureau of Investigation are investigating the fatal shooting.

Bovino told reporters that Pretti’s confrontation with Border Patrol agents on Saturday “looks like a situation where an individual wanted to do maximum damage and massacre law enforcement.” He added that the officer who fatally shot the 37-year-old was “highly trained” and had worked as a Border Patrol agent for eight years.
