Disney confirmed on Wednesday that ABC, a subsidiary of Disney, is “indefinitely” removing “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” from its broadcasting schedule after Jimmy Kimmel made “offensive and insensitive” comments regarding the assassination of Turning Point USA Founder Charlie Kirk.
During an episode of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” on Monday, the left-wing comedian mocked President Donald Trump and the MAGA movement in the aftermath of Kirk’s assassination.
Kimmel said, “We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it.”
Kimmel’s suggestion that Tyler Robinson, the 22-year-old assassination suspect, is linked to the MAGA movement comes as law enforcement officials have confirmed that Robinson was influenced by left-wing ideology and had a transgender boyfriend.
In a Wednesday interview on “The Benny Show,” Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Brendan Carr warned that Disney could face significant consequences if the company did not take action to address Kimmel’s comments. Carr explained that ABC has a license granted by the FCC that comes with “an obligation to operate in the public interest.”
“Look, we can do this the easy way or the hard way,” Carr warned. “These companies can find ways to change conduct, to take action, frankly, on Kimmel, or, you know, there’s going to be additional work for the FCC ahead.”
Following Carr’s threat, a Disney spokesperson told Fox News, “Jimmy Kimmel Live will be preempted indefinitely.”
Additionally, Nexstar Media Group, which owns a large number of ABC affiliate stations, issued a press release that confirmed it would be preempting Kimmel’s show “for the foreseeable future.”
“Mr. Kimmel’s comments about the death of Mr. Kirk are offensive and insensitive at a critical time in our national political discourse, and we do not believe they reflect the spectrum of opinions, views or values of the local communities in which we are located,” Nexstar Broadcasting President Andrew Alford stated.
“Continuing to give Mr. Kimmel a broadcast platform in the communities we serve is simply not in the public interest at the current time, and we have made the difficult decision to preempt his show in an effort to let cooler heads prevail as we move toward the resumption of respectful, constructive dialogue,” Alford added.
Celebrating news of Kimmel’s cancellation in a Wednesday evening post on Truth Social, Trump wrote, “Great News for America: The ratings challenged Jimmy Kimmel Show is CANCELLED.”
The president applauded ABC for “finally having the courage to do what had to be done” and suggested that Kimmel had “ZERO talent.”
