President Donald Trump revoked former Vice President Kamala Harris’ Secret Service protection on Thursday ahead of the former vice president’s upcoming book tour.

In a Thursday letter titled “Memorandum for the Secretary of Homeland Security,” which was first obtained by CNN, Trump stated, “You are hereby authorized to discontinue any security-related procedures previously authorized by Executive Memorandum, beyond those required by law, for the following individual, effective September 1, 2025: Former Vice President Kamala D. Harris.”

An anonymous Secret Service official confirmed to CNN that the order to have the former vice president’s Secret Service protection detail revoked came from the White House. The anonymous official noted that the decision to revoke Harris’ Secret Service protection was not the result of a new threat assessment or a security review.

According to CNN, the anonymous Secret Service official explained that the Secret Service did not flag any security concerns regarding Trump’s order. Additionally, the official told CNN that the former vice president’s security detail included a dozen to a few dozen agents at different times and that Harris had 24-hour protection.

Following Trump’s order to revoke Harris’ Secret Service protection, the former vice president’s security detail will end by September 1, according to CNN. The outlet noted that while former vice presidents typically receive six months of Secret Service protection after the end of their term in office, multiple sources confirmed that former President Joe Biden issued a memorandum to extend Harris’ Secret Service protection for an additional year prior to leaving office.

Additionally, CNN reported that the Secret Service protection detail for Doug Emhoff, the former vice president’s husband, ended on July 21, as the spouses of former vice presidents typically receive Secret Service protection for only six months after an administration changes.

In a statement to CNN, Kirsten Allen, a senior advisor for Harris, said, “The Vice President is grateful to the United States Secret Service for their professionalism, dedication, and unwavering commitment to safety.”

According to CNN, Trump’s decision to revoke the former vice president’s Secret Service protection comes ahead of the September 23 release of Harris’ book, titled “107 Days.” Harris is expected to visit multiple cities as part of her book tour.
