President Donald Trump hinted on Tuesday that Vice President J.D. Vance is “most likely” the top contender for the Republican Party’s presidential nominee in the 2028 election.

During an interview on Tuesday, Trump indicated that while he would “like to run” and has “the best poll numbers” he has “ever had,” he will “probably not” run for a third term in the White House.

Following the president’s comments during Tuesday’s interview, Trump was asked by Fox News correspondent Peter Doocy about the 2028 presidential election.

“This weekend, Secretary of State [Marco] Rubio said that he thought J.D. Vance would be a great nominee,” Doocy told Trump. “You could clear the entire Republican field right now. Do you agree that the heir-apparent to MAGA is J.D. Vance?”

In response, Trump said, “Well, I think most likely, in all fairness. He’s the vice president. I think Marco is also somebody that maybe would get together with J.D. in some form.”

“I also think we have incredible people, some of the people on the stage right here, so it’s too early obviously to talk about it,” Trump added. “But certainly, he’s doing a great job, and he would be probably favored at this point.”

According to The Daily Wire, Vance, Attorney General Pam Bondi, and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem appeared next to Trump on stage during the president’s answer to Doocy on Tuesday.

During an interview last week with Fox News host Lara Trump, the daughter-in-law of the president, Rubio was asked if he was considering a potential presidential run in the 2028 election.

“Well, I think J.D. Vance would be a great nominee,” Rubio told Lara Trump. The secretary of state explained that Vance is doing a “great job” as Donald Trump’s vice president and that he is Rubio’s “close friend.” While Rubio acknowledged that it is “kind of early” to discuss potential 2028 nominees, he said he hopes Vance intends to run in 2028.

Emphasizing the importance of his current position as secretary of state, Rubio added, “I want to do this job as long as the president allows me to do it and stay in that job, which would keep me here all the way through January of 2028.”
