Queens Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani, a self-identified Muslim and Democratic socialist, won Tuesday’s mayoral election in New York City against former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Republican challenger Curtis Sliwa. In his victory speech, Mamdani announced his plans to have the government solve all of New York City’s problems.
During his election victory speech on Tuesday night, Mamdani said, “I am Muslim. I am a Democratic socialist, and most damning of all, I refuse to apologize for any of this.”
According to The Post Millennial, Mamdani repeatedly promised to lead New York City into a “new age” that will lead to “relentless improvement,” and will be defined by “competence and compassion.”
In a video shared on X, formerly Twitter, Mamdani revealed his plans to expand the power of the government in New York City, saying, “We will prove that there is no problem too large for government to solve and no concern too small for it to care about.” In a caption to the video, journalist Libby Emmons warned, “Those are terrifying words.”
Sharing his vision for major changes to New York City, Mamdani quoted former socialist leader Eugene Debs, saying, “The sun may have set over our city this evening, but as Eugene Debs once said, I can see the dawn of a better day for humanity.”
In another video clip, Mamdani claimed that Tuesday’s election victory showed that the “working people of New York” who supported his socialist political movement in this year’s mayoral race have “toppled a political dynasty.”
“We chose hope together, hope over tyranny, hope over big money and small ideas, hope over despair,” Mamdani stated. “We won because New Yorkers allowed themselves to hope that the impossible could be made possible, and we won because we insisted that no longer would politics be something that is done to us. Now, it is something that we do.”
Mamdani also announced on Tuesday that his administration will increase representation for Muslims in New York City. The Democratic socialist pledged he will show Muslims “that they belong, not just in the five boroughs of this city, but in the halls of power.” He added, “No more will New York be a city where you can traffic in Islamophobia and win an election.”
