A new report claims that John Bolton, President Donald Trump’s former national security adviser and a top critic of the president, is expected to be indicted by a federal grand jury this week.

According to The New York Post, anonymous Justice Department officials told the outlet that an indictment against Bolton was expected either Wednesday or Thursday after a federal grand jury met on Wednesday afternoon to consider charges against Trump’s former national security advisor for allegedly sharing classified materials on a private email server.

One Justice Department official told The New York Post that the case against Bolton is “air tight.”

The New York Post reported that the expected indictment against Bolton comes after Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents raided the former national security adviser’s home in Maryland and office in Washington, D.C., two months ago to retrieve evidence that Bolton possessed “highly sensitive national security” information.

Sources previously told The New York Post that Bolton has been accused of using a private AOL email account to send classified information and to record notes and assessments of his time as national security adviser during Trump’s first administration.

According to The New York Post, a probable cause warrant indicated that Bolton’s email account was hacked by an unidentified foreign entity, which could have resulted in the exposure of classified or sensitive information to a foreign government or a foreign actor.

Additionally, court records obtained by The New York Post show that investigators discovered classified information during the FBI raids on Bolton’s house and office. Documents recovered by investigators included information on weapons of mass destruction, secret travel memos, strategic government communications, and the U.S. mission to the United Nations.

Court documents show that Bolton told officials that he “did not have any notes or other records from his government service” after he was fired by Trump in September of 2019. In a recent statement obtained by NBC News, Abbe Lowell, Bolton’s lawyer, addressed the investigation into Bolton, saying, “An objective and thorough review will show nothing inappropriate was stored or kept by Amb. Bolton. These materials, many of which are documents that had been approved as part of a pre-publication review for Amb. Bolton’s book, were reviewed and closed years ago.”
