Former Vice President Richard Cheney, who was known as former President George W. Bush’s chief architect for the “war on terror,” died on Monday night at the age of 84.

In a Tuesday statement obtained by Fox News, Cheney’s family said, “Richard B. Cheney, the 46th Vice President of the United States, died last night, November 3, 2025. He was 84 years old. His beloved wife of 61 years, Lynne, his daughters, Liz and Mary, and other family members were with him as he passed.”

The Cheney family confirmed that the former vice president’s death was caused by “complications” from pneumonia, as well as cardiac and vascular disease. According to The Associated Press, Cheney had previously survived five heart attacks.

The Cheney family noted that the 84-year-old served the United States “for decades” as the White House chief of staff, a member of the House of Representatives for Wyoming, the secretary of defense, and the vice president of the United States.

“Dick Cheney was a great and good man who taught his children and grandchildren to love our country, and to live lives of courage, honor, love, kindness, and fly fishing,” Cheney’s family added. “We are grateful beyond measure for all Dick Cheney did for our country. And we are blessed beyond measure to have loved and been loved by this noble giant of a man.”

According to Fox News, Cheney became a congressional fellow in Washington, D.C., in 1968 before becoming a staff assistant for former President Richard Nixon’s administration in 1969. Cheney later served as the chief of staff for former President Gerald Ford from 1975 to 1977.

Following his role as chief of staff under the Ford administration, Cheney was elected to the House of Representatives in 1978, where he served six terms and eventually became the House minority whip, according to the White House Archives.

According to the White House Archives’ website, Cheney later served as the secretary of defense for former President George H. W. Bush from 1989 to 1993 and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1991 for his role in the Gulf War. 

After Bush lost his reelection campaign, Cheney joined the American Enterprise Institute before becoming the chairman of the board and CEO for Halliburton, an oil manufacturing company, in 1995. 

Cheney later returned to politics and was elected as vice president in 2000 and 2004, serving alongside former President George W. Bush. During Bush. Cheney became the chief architect of the “war on terror” following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, according to CNN.

According to USA Today, Cheney became one of the top Republican critics of President Donald Trump. During the 2024 presidential election, Cheney announced that he voted for former Vice President Kamala Harris instead of Trump.
