Trump teases ‘51st state’ Canada hours before election
President Donald Trump urged Canada to become America’s 51st state on Monday, just hours before Canadians once again handed power to the Liberal Party.
“Good luck to the Great people of Canada. Elect the man who has the strength and wisdom to cut your taxes in half, increase your military power, for free, to the highest level in the World, have your Car, Steel, Aluminum, Lumber, Energy, and all other businesses, QUADRUPLE in size, WITH ZERO TARIFFS OR TAXES, if Canada becomes the cherished 51st State of the United States of America,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.
“No more artificially drawn line from many years ago. Look how beautiful this land mass would be,” he continued. “Free access with NO BORDER. ALL POSITIVES WITH NO NEGATIVES. IT WAS MEANT TO BE! America can no longer subsidize Canada with the Hundreds of Billions of Dollars a year that we have been spending in the past. It makes no sense unless Canada is a State!”
Prime Minister Mark Carney’s populist opponent, Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre, lost his seat in Parliament after blowing a massive lead that many believed made him a shoo-in for prime minister.
Some are blaming the Conservative Party’s huge losses on Trump’s “trade war” and annexation talk – not exactly a shock that hosers are using Trump as a scapegoat.
"Our old relationship with the United States, a relationship based on steadily increasing integration, is over," Carney said in a victory speech. "The system of open global trade anchored by the United States, a system that Canada has relied on since the Second World War, a system that, while not perfect, has helped deliver prosperity for our country for decades, is over."
"These are tragedies, but it's also our new reality,” he added.
Of course Canada is angry about Trump’s tariffs. The nation has been taking advantage of Americans for years. Trump is finally leveling the playing field, and like a toddler who just got told “no” for the first time, Canucks are throwing a fit.
“In Canada, we find that they’re charging us over 200% for dairy products. You know about that. And when I left, we had that well taken care of, but under Biden they just kept raising it. Very difficult to deal with the Canadian representatives,” Trump explained from the Oval Office earlier this year.
“250% for dairy products. Tariff. So where do you hear that? You don’t hear that. They have a tremendously high tariff…on lumber. They make it impossible for us to sell lumber or dairy products into Canada, but our numbers are a tiny fraction of that. Almost nonexistent,” he continued.
“Canada has been ripping us off for years on tariffs…which is taking advantage of our farmers,” he added. “So that’s not going to happen anymore. They’ll be met with the exact same tariff unless they drop it.”
Canadians seem more interested in giving Trump the finger than electing leaders who can start fixing their cost-of-living crisis. Bold move. We’ll see how it works out for them.
